SBI Probationary Officer Exam

Introduction

State Bank of India (SBI) conducts an online exam to recruit candidates for the post of Probationary Officer (PO) for its various branches throughout the country. This year there are approximately 2400 vacancies. After the preliminary exam (Round 1), there is a mains exam followed by interview and Group discussion.

Salary

The salary includes a basic pay of Rs. 27,620 with 4 advance increments. The official will also be eligible for D.A, H.R.A/Lease rental, C.C.A, Medical and other allowances & perquisites as per rules in force from time to time.
The total compensation per annum would be a minimum of 7.55 lacs and maximum of 12.93 lacs depending on place of posting and other factors.

Eligibility

Graduates in any discipline from any recognized university or any equivalent qualification recognized by the Government of India.
Candidates who are in the final year of graduation can also apply.

Age Limit

The age of the candidates should be between 21 years and 30 years, both inclusive.

Relaxation of age limit

The upper age limit is relaxed for the candidates belonging to the following categories.

Persons Ordinarily domiciled in the Kashmir Division of the state of Jammu & Kashmir during the period 01.01.1980 to 31.12.19895 years
Cumulative age relaxation, other than what is mentioned will not be allowed.

Syllabus

Preliminary Exam

The SBI PO preliminary examination consists of three sections.
  1. English Language
  2. Reasoning
  3. Quantitative Ability
The preliminary exam is of objective type with 3 sections and a composite time of 1 hour. The pattern is as follows:

Every question carries equal marks (1 mark) and ¼ marks will be penalized for every wrong answer.
Some important topics for the exam are:
  1. English: Reading Comprehension, Clozetest, Antonyms and Synonyms, Parajumbles, Sentence Correction,
  2. Quantitative: Arithmetic, Time, Speed Distance, Mensuration and Geometry, Permutations and Combinations, Ratio and Proportion, Profit and Loss, Simple and Compound Interest, Number Series
  3. Reasoning: Visual Reasoning, Directions, Verbal Reasoning, Seating Arrangement, Coding and Decoding, Syllogisms, Blood Relations, Input-Output systems, Inequalities based reasoning

Mains Exam

The Mains exam has an objective test and a descriptive test.
The Objective Test of 3 hours duration consists of 4 sections for total 200 marks.The Objective Test will have separate timing for every section:

Every question carries equal marks (1 mark) and ¼ marks will be penalized for every wrong answer in both the objective tests. There are sectional cutoffs in both the Mains and the preliminary exam.
The Descriptive test will be a test of English language and will require the student to write an Essay and a Letter by typing it on the computer. The test will be for 30 mins and for 50 marks.
The marks obtained in the preliminary exam will not be added for the selection and only the marks obtained in the Mains exams - both descriptive and objective will be added to the marks obtained in GD and Interview for the preparation of the final merit list.
